Tips & Tricks For Doing Toddler Hair
Doing your little one’s hair can be quite the task, especially when they squirm! I thought I would share some tips and tricks I have learned to keep your kiddos distracted while doing their hair, in addition to products I highly recommend that help simplify the process!
Stay Consistent: Creating a consistent routine can help familiarize your child and help them become comfortable with getting their hair done. When they are still small I like to have them sit in the high chair for stability.
Provide Distractions: Distraction is KEY when doing the hair of a little one. I have used toys, special snacks, music, and when needed I have incorporated letting them watch an educational show.
Show Empathy: Acknowledge any discomfort they are feeling and let them know what you are doing as you do it, if you accidentally pull too hard you can say “I’m sorry that must have hurt, I am trying to be gentle.”
Make The Process Efficient:
Dampen the hair, it makes it easier to manage and less likely to be moved around.
Work in sections, detangling and styling small sections of hair can reduce tension and discomfort on their little head.
Be quick and gentle, especially if/when they get restless.
Involve them, give your child tasks like passing hair accessories to help them feel important and involved in the process.
Use Quality Products: Leave-in conditioners can soften and detangle hair, making it much easier to work with. Styling cream and hair oil can condition baby hairs and help them lay down smoothly. Use a fine-tooth comb to easily separate and direct the fine baby hairs into place. For my boys I LOVE using this styling gel!
Be Patient: Most importantly, remember to have patience with the process. Remember that it is normal for toddlers to be wiggly and that it is helpful to take breaks when needed! Showing empathy, being gentle, and having patience will go a LONG way!
