Household Hacks For Busy Moms

Running a household, even with the help of a partner can be very overwhelming! The housework piles up quickly and even becoming a day or two behind can set you back further than you may like to admit. Over the years I have been able to figure out a few hacks that have made it much more manageable!

Here are a list of hacks I have adapted in our home:

  • Use seasons for deep cleans: In our home we decided to use the spring and fall for deep, thorough cleaning. We like to deep clean in the spring because we tend to do a lot of travel in the summer and aren’t home to do much cleaning and maintenance. We do another deep clean in the fall because during the winter, let’s face it, we are often fighting off colds and busy prepping for the holidays.

  • Prepare breakfast the night before: Mornings tend to be extremely busy, from getting the kids out of bed, to school drop off to work it can sometimes leave the kitchen a mess of coffee, dishes, and food! I have found it so helpful to prep a simple and healthy breakfast the night before (after the kids are down) so that the morning runs much more smoothly!

  • Rotate baskets of toys: Keeping 3 or 4 large toys baskets that you can rotate between can help the clutter immensely! Too many toys lying around can be distracting and a tripping hazard, keeping a few baskets of toys in storage and rotating them out can help with this. It also gives your kids “new” toys to look forward to.

  • Institute a 15-minute pickup everyday: Setting aside time each day, even just a quick 15 minutes can help keep counters clear and rooms looking tidy. It can reduce the stress that things piling up can cause!

  • Keep paper plates on hand: Sometimes the business and chaos can really get to you and on those days I give myself a break with the dishes and use recyclable plates, bowls, etc.

  • Vacuum one room a day: Taking the time to vacuum the ENTIRE house can be a daunting task, whereas taking 10 minutes to vacuum one area of the house each day is much more manageable.

  • Wash the socks in a mesh bag: Sick of losing socks? We were too! I would find random socks with no matches in the dryer constantly. Ever since we started washing them all together in a small mesh bag it hasn’t happened again!

  • Buy and cook chicken in bulk: Making nutritious dinners for the family can be difficult when life is filled to the brim with dozens of other important things! That is why I started buying and cooking chicken in bulk, then putting it in freezer bags to pull out throughout the week has been life-changing for the stress and time planning and making dinners can cause.

  • Weekly/Monthly Counsel: Setting aside time to fill out the calendar together as a couple and/or family to counsel and decide who does what and what commitments everyone has makes a huge difference in the day to day chaos!

Keeping a clean home has so many benefits, it can improve mood, reduce illness in the home, and increase productivity. It can be very difficult to function or be creative when surrounded by dirt, gunk, and especially clutter. Doing as much as I can to reduce stress and time spent on household tasks has helped me have more time with my precious family- which is the most important thing to me!
